Mulching Blade Installation Guide — Direction & Setup

To install a mulching blade, slide it onto the spindle with the cutting edge facing down and the curved sail or lift wing facing up toward the deck. Align the blade's center hole with the spindle bolt, then torque the bolt to the manufacturer's specified value. For flail mowers, ensure each blade is hung on its correct flail carrier — straight, left-hand, or right-hand — as specified by your equipment's configuration.

Straight blades are used in the center positions of a flail mower rotor, while left-hand and right-hand curved blades are designed for specific positions on either side. The curvature directs cut material toward the center discharge zone. Using the wrong configuration can cause uneven cutting and premature wear. Always match blade type to the position specified by your mower's parts diagram.

Plain blades meet OEM standards and are suitable for standard conditions. Hard-Faced blades have welding material applied to key wear surfaces, typically doubling service life in abrasive environments. Super-Koat blades undergo a proprietary heat-treating process that provides three or more times the lifespan of plain blades — ideal for rocky, sandy, or heavily abrasive field conditions.

Replacement frequency depends on blade grade, soil abrasiveness, and hours of operation. Plain blades in abrasive environments may need replacement more frequently, while Hard-Faced blades last roughly twice as long and Super-Koat blades three times or more. Inspect blades regularly for visible wear, thinning of the cutting edge, cracks, or imbalance, and replace them before significant performance degradation occurs.
